“No one wants to look done,” says Southern California plastic surgeon Dr. Renato Calabria. “I can deliver a natural-looking result.” A board certified plastic surgeon who has been in practice in Beverly Hills since 1995, he says that gone are the days when dramatic changes were requested by individuals seeking enhancement; today, the goal of most patients – both men and women – is to appear more youthful in a subtle manner.
Not only does this desire for subtle outcomes continue to reign as a steady trend among those showing signs of aging, but also the average age for facial rejuvenation has shifted over the years. Specifically in regards to facelift surgery (“rhytidectomy”), Dr. Calabria says that this cosmetic procedure used to be commonly performed on those who are 55 years of age or older. Now, he acknowledges that the average age bracket for individuals undergoing some sort of facelift technique is between 40 and 45 years old. Although Dr. Calabria says that there is no perfect age for a facelift (“really depends on the patient”), there is an advantage to performing rhytidectomy on those who are between 40 and 45 years old – it can be used as a preventive measure as well. Nothing can stop the process of growing older, but a facelift helps a patient maintain his or her “fountain of youth” for a long period of time. “I am performing it earlier than later, before the aging really shows,” admits Dr. Calabria, also explaining that there is such a thing as being too young for a facelift; he does not perform this procedure on those who are younger than 35 years old.
Based in Beverly Hills, Dr. Calabria has treated many people who are in the public eye. Whether a Hollywood star or a high-profile business person, there is no one type of patient that he treats. But, he says, he often performs facelift surgery on individuals who are in the entertainment industry because getting some sort of facial rejuvenation procedure, such as a facelift, is a “must in Hollywood” if you are over 40 years old.
During the initial consultation with Dr. Calabria, the various types of facelift methods can be discussed. Two modern approaches to rhytidectomy are the “Adjustable Facelift” and “The Stem-Cell Facelift,” both of which Dr. Calabria offers at his Beverly Hills practice. Should you be interested in attaining a younger-looking appearance through a non-surgical alternative, such as with a facial filler, it is important to realize that this type of treatment will not provide results that are identical to facelift outcomes. Rhytidectomy offers long-lasting results, and can take off 10 to 15 years from a person’s face. Even as he or she ages, this will remain the same. When additional aging develops, it is then that the individual may opt for a secondary procedure.
